Cat’s claw is one of Peru’s most important medicinal plants and is used for prevention and to treat a multitude of health conditions.
About – Cat’s claw, aka Uña de Gato, is named after its curved, claw-like thorns that grow on its stem. It is a woody vine, that can climb as high as 100 feet, that grows in the Amazon rainforest. It is native to South and Central America and much of the cat’s claw sold in the United States was grown in Peru. The bark of the cat’s claw vine can be crushed and used to make tea. Extracts are also available in either liquid or capsule forms. The bark and root of this plant are both used as medicine and have been used for centuries to treat various health problems including: arthritis, stomach ulcers, inflammation, dysentery, and fevers. It was also used as a form of birth control. Some early test tubes studies suggest that cat’s claw may kill tumor and cancer cells. No other rainforest plant has ever prompted such worldwide attention since quinine was discovered in the bark of a Peruvian tree in the 17th century.
Nutrition – Cat’s claw has antioxidant properties. It stimulates the immune system and increases white blood cell production, helping the body get rid of free radicals that damage cells and may reduce and even help prevent some of the damage they cause. It is used in the treatment of certain types of cancer. Cat’s claw’s quinovic acid glycosides help it to fight viruses and its tannins and sterols make it a powerful natural anti-inflammatory, making it beneficial to alleviate and reduce arthritis and also alleviates bone, joint and muscle pain.
Pregnant or nursing women are cautioned not to take cat’ s claw, because it may cause miscarriage.
